I'm 15, and have basically been messed about by an orthodontist for the past few years, who tried to convince me i didn't really need them. I'm not all that self-conscious about my smile, and there's one tooth i would only really be bothered about changing. However, my family keeps telling me it will be worth it, but my friends say it doesn't look like i need braces. Is it really worth going through it all when my gut feeling says no?or will i regret it?

I really need more info about the tooth you are talking about... is it crooked or do you have a gap etc.... I wanted braces a few years ago because I had a gap between my front two teeth, I talked to the dentist and he offered putting a cap on my front teeth to close the gap. Looking at me you would never know that I had the gap. The only bad thing about it is that they sometimes only last 7-8 years and then you have to get it redone if it snaps off like mine did this year, but it is better than having to wear a retainer everyday. Talk to your dentist and see if there is an alternate to braces for your tooth. Maybe there is another way. Good luck :-)

Your 15.....

Now IS the time to get them if you do, but I find that as you get older you may get more self conscious about your smile. I hear people say all the time that they wished they'd gotten their "teeth fixed" as a young person, or mention that someone should have gotten their teeth fixed when they were young -- they are too grown to be walking around with "messed up" teeth. It DOES make an impression, whether you believe it or not.

Do you want to be grown wearing braces? Not such a good look, but you have to feel comfortable with whatever decision you make.

It is not clear as to what is your problem in terms of orthodontics. It is perfectly alright for the parents to be concerned about the overall personality development of their kids, but not to the extent of pushing them to the wall by over indulgence. When you are not self conscious about your smile, it is construed to be alright except the one tooth. If so, your answer may be available in "Instant Orthodontics", i.e., a porcelain veneer or a cap/crown as the case may be. Besides visiting websites like http://www.dentalcare-indiatour.com/veeneers.html find out, see, and talk to the people who have had veneers/caps and satisfy yourself with first hand information. Happy smiling!

If it's just one tooth forget about it. It's gonna cost about 2-5 thousand dollars!

if you feel uncomfortable about it then do it. i had braces for about 2 1/2 years and i am extremly happy with how it turned out.. if you dont like the metal feeling try invisiline. its fast and cheeper than metal braces.
