Same as a motorcycle helmet. If its always been yours and you know its never been dropped or struck hard, then it should be OK. Although if its a full shell helmet, the coating and paint 'break down' after 5 years and really should be replaced.
BUT, apparently, if you wear a helmet you are more at risk of an accident! (BBC News Story)

I would wait on riding until you get a new helmet. Theoretically, helmets are only certified for 5 years after they have been made, and yours is more that 10?
You don't need a high-tech helmet, usually any 30 buck helmet will be safe, probably not as light as one 100 bucks, but safe.

If it is well constructed and hasn't been in an accident it will probably still protect your head better than no helmet.
However, a recent study in the UK found drivers actually pass closer to cyclists wearing helmets, so if the helmet may have been compromised in some way, it may be safer to not wear it.

the place I stay that's the regulation once you're under 18. whilst i grow to be a new child no person wore helmets on a bike. And maximum individuals have been ok. 8^) yet there -are- head injuries. In a fashion they are the worst sorts of injuries. A sufferer of extreme head trauma can deplete $2 hundred,000 worth of scientific care interior the 1st couple of days and then die besides. Is it that plenty worry or that uncomfortable to positioned on a helmet?

No. Most of my club members replace their helmets every two years because you should. Helmets have a two year wear life in most brands because your sweat, heat, and climate conditions wear the units out. If has any cracks get rid of it because it's been comprised(Toast). So $ 36 is not bad if you hear my hospital bill you would buy a new one.

You have got some really stupid answers here. Firstly i will point out if you do stand on it then it will be useless. All helmet compnies reccommend replacing a helmet after every crash or impact. if there has been no impact then age will be irrelevant the only difference will be the advances in technology.

That depends whether you're in your teens and you old one is a kiddy helment.
If your head is the same size and the helmet fits and is undamaged, then you don't even need a new one.

Any helmet will protect you to a certain degree, but not as much as one that is new. Material deteriorate over time.
