Some people love chocolate fountains, some hate them. I personally think they look like a fountain of poop. Also I have heard of caterers recycling old chocolate from one wedding and serving it again for another event- not sanitary. Also if any kids will be there, be prepared for chocolate to be ALL OVER EVERYTHING.
If that didn't warn you away, then go ahead and have one. You're not required to do the traditional wedding cake thing.

Chocolate fountains are beautiful. But if you are thinking of using it to replace the wedding cake I say no way. If you want a fountain of something but do not want to do the chocolate and the wedding cake then I suggest a punch fountain. I went to a wedding a few months ago where they did that and it was gorgeous.
Congratulations on the wedding.

I Do the purchasing for a hugh Hotel in Florida and we occasionally do a chocolate fountain station instead of a cake, so it isn't unheard of. Some of your guest may expect the tradition so have your caterer get a small one layer cake that is for the wedding party only. HAve it decorated like a wedding cake and take it home with you to freeze for the first anniversity. It has been done many times in Florida

Get the cake. Chocolate fountains are incrediably MESSY! (Yes, I have one, we've used it 3 times.) If you don't mind dripping chocolate all over the table, all over the floor, and all over your nice white dress, go ahead!
Just get a little 3 tier cake for you to cut, it'll be fun. Put the chocolate fountain in the buffet line where it belongs. I'm surprised your caterer hasn't told you this already.

I love it! Do the chocolate fountain. You can have so many yummies to dip... angel food cake, marshmallows, rice krispy treats, pretzels... the list is endless.
If you really feel like you need a cake of some sort, maybe try a "cupcake" wedding cake. I've heard that they are very popular!
Besides, do most people even like wedding cake?

I'm having both! Consider having an inexpensive wedding cake, something very simple but delicious. Maybe purchase one at a local grocery chain store (they are pretty reasonable) and then have the chocolate fountain.

You mean like dipping a strawberry and feeding it to each other in place of feeding each other a piece of cake? Sounds like a neat idea if you have plenty of cake available in the buffet.
My husband and I had a main wedding cake that we used for pictures and to feed each other, but then we had three different homemade cakes for everyone to choose from to eat.
Go for it!

The chocolate fountain looks nice and tastes good but damn is it messy! The kids start playing in it and splashing it all over the table. If you must have chocolate...I would arrange something with fruit already dipped in chocolate....chocolate covered strawberries, pretzels, marshmellows and pineapple. good luck!
