We recently moved to Malaysia. This insect is about the size of a bumble bee, is mostly black, and has an orange abdomen, and it's sting is very painful. (My unfortunate brother's moanings confirm this.) In addition to this question, does any one know how to treat this sting?

Wow- Malaysia. That must be pretty cool.

I am not sure what type of bug this is. There are a few web sites out there that have pictures of descriptions of bugs- you might want to try yahoo search or google search, for sites that identify bugs, to see what kind it was.

I think the main thing is making sure the stinger is not still in the wound. I would ice an ice pack off and on for pain, as well as some Motrin/tylenol, according to his size and weight. If he has any difficulty breathing, severe swelling, signs of infection, or problems swallowing, get him to a doctor immediately as he could be having an allergic reaction. Hopefully, using some pain meds and some ice and time will calm his sting down soon.

You might also try calling a neighbor or two and asking them they know what the bug might be, to help identify it for the future. Hope your brother feels better soon.

It sounds like a red-tailed bumble bee, although I don't know whether they are native to your area. Basically, he will get better soon. Make sure there is no sting left in the skin. If he is old enough to take painkillers, that might help.

its called a yellow jacket...if he's allergic to the sting, he will start swelling up...he's gonna have the pain for several days...
Get him to the ER if he's in too much pain..

I believe it's called the black, orange-bottomed hornet-like bug. Ye must give him rum until the moaning stops. Arrgh!!!
