There is an International license to drive required in Europe.

The exam is not simple.
Do you work at a military installation?
- the benefit is the exam costs less and it's in English.

My license lasts 6 years.
Good luck!

When I first moved to Germany (from Canada) the Landratsamt (that's where you get licences) told me I didn't need an International Driver's Licence, my Canadian licence was valid up to 3 months in Germany. After the 3 months I just transferred my Canadian licence to a European Driver's Licence...no charge.

Sorry don't know about the other European countries, but seeing these things have all been standardized in the EU I imagine it's pretty much the same every where in Europe.

It depends on the laws there but you should be able to use your US license for now although you should apply for an international drivers licence. You don't have to take a test just apply I believe. You may need to switch your licence over to a Italian license evenually with out a test.

Have you seen how they drive in Italy? I think they get their licenses out of the cracker jack box.

You should be able to obtain an International Drivers Licence that will enable you to drive in Europe for a set period of time. Ask at your local automobile association how you go about applying for it.

you can go to AAA and ask for one. Keep in mind you must know the rules of the road for your own safety. they do not ask you to take an exam, only show them your valid d/l. they will ask you how long your trip will be, then they will enter those dates on the outside of the document. then they hand you the original and that's it.
