No, you're not expected to deal with this smell. This is hideous! Not normal. Do you have any idea what you may be getting yourself into with this guy? Stick with him much longer and that smell is going to be a part of you. The nose knows.
He over compensating by being super nice because he knows he has a problem. Yeah, he going to be nice to you too. Don't want to lose this good thing. How much longer are you going to stomach this before your appetite bites the dust? Surprising you've stayed on this long. A date and everything. Out in public. You two were actually served in a place where there is food? Mind boggling.
You say he's a wimp? Well, wimp that foul carcass of his into the nearest tub of bleach. You care about him? Tough love, baby! Time for a major overhaul. Since he's treated you so charming now is the time to return a favor. Treat him to a nice clean breath of fresh air. And if he doesn't want to change his feline skunk funk, well then, burn your bridges, and your clothes, far far away from this ground zero. The quicker the better too!

try to do things of showing him how to be clean at his place. Surprising him one time of cleaning the place and putting some tissue paper and a spray and shampoo for cat would help. As you said he is a sweet guy and showing him things like that is sweet too. Its not bad to teach him cleanliness.

if you were talkin to some good lookin dude u were way into... would YOU show up smellin like yesterday??
he shoudl respect your wishes in regards to how he smells cause honestly... it'll be a mood killer IFyou guys get to a sexual point in the relationship.
so... TELL him about it... be open... and if he doesnt wanna listen or at least make an attempt to remedy the situation... you can call me.

mayb he believe that the cat pee smells nice?? or mayb he's used to it? but frantically saying his house smells bad is your opinion. i think you should just be honest to him that the smell is kind of irritating and see what he says, i have a feeling he might be quite kool about it. but good luck with whatever you decide, but i personally think you shouldn't break it off with someone just cause of their smell.. what sort of mentality is that?? :)

just be honest with him. but do it very gently. if he does everything to make everyone else happy like you say then maybe he might do something about the smell.

im going to share you a guy secret
all guys are not dirty like girls think.
us guys have 2 places...a clean place, where we bring girls who deserve it(potential wife and mother of our kids) and dirty places, where we just party with girls and throw them out like a bag of garbage.
