you can....but I think you are asking if you may.
Typically Ms. is a nonpolitical way of refering to another female. If you are not sure they are married call them Ms. If you are sure they are or are not married still call them Ms. Some women, like myself, do not think it is anyone's business if they are married or not.
Also, if you say it quick enough, no one will even be the wiser.
(Mis-er-ess/Ms-is, or Miss and Ms) sounds the same when you are in the south.

You can use Ms. for any woman especially when you don't know her marital status. Also some women prefer Ms to mrs. or miss.

yes, it is technically the polite thing to do. Ms or Miss until you are sure she's married or not, at which point she may still wish for you to adress her as Miss. I personally feel stuck up so I ask people just to call me Laura with a smile when they do that, but until you know them, it's the safest way to go.

Absolutely. Actually calling someone with the title "Ms." is the correct way. Some women, even though they're married, still use "Ms." professionally. This way it keeps people from knowing her status- a way to not have to disclose whether she is married or not.

The proper name would be "ma'am" when addressing a woman. If you know her name, then it you can use the Mrs. or Ms...the later is actually used by divorced women who haven't change their names.

Yes, you can. Finding out whether a woman is "Miss" or "Mrs" may not be easy. So to avoid embarrassment someone came up with this convenient and brilliant solution.

Well you can call her miss until she corrects you. Its no insult. But you can check her ring finger to see if she's married. But just to be safe--either way I don't see why it'd be bad
