One of my friends say yes they can!
The other says no they have to be the same sex other wise they are not identical for obvious reasons!
I was wondering if there are any identical twins out there who can help me solve there disagreement, as at the moment I am stuck in the middle and I really am not sure!
There is a webise I looked at that says "When Identical Twins are not identical"! But it does not really say for sure that yes you can!
But from reading it I am guessing that yes you can!
No silly answers like refering to male and female body parts either, as that is just to obvious and as if we have not thought of that one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS STATEMENT THEN????????
When Identical Twins Are Not Identical
Past studies of identical twins separated at birth have documented remarkable similarities between them, despite the fact that they were reared under radically different circumstances. Their physical appearances, habits, vocations, health histories, and other factors are often eerily the same. For example, two female identical twins, who had never seen each other, each wore eight rings! The upshot of such investigations is that most of a person's characteristics are genetic in origin; that is, Nature dominates nurture.

But what about identical twins who are remarkably different? They can, for instance, differ appreciably in size, intellect, and behavior. In such cases, does nurture dominate nature? No! Identical twins may diverge even in the womb, where one may receive more oxygen and nutrients than the other. One also may be assailed in by viruses, bacteria, or drugs, while the other escapes. Even more drastic is the possi bility that one twin may pick up an extra chromosome soon after the original egg has split. Also, mutations may doom one twin to Down's syndrome or some other genetic affliction, while the other is unscathed. Identical twins may even be of different sex! Of course, such twins are genetically different, but they are still monozygotic (from the same egg). Blood tests will show them to be identical.

It used to be thought that the small differences that did exist between identical twins separated at birth were surely due to nurture, not nature. But, considering all the differences that can accrue in, it seems that the role of nurture in shaping individuals is much smaller than thought, possibly negligible. No, they can't. Identical twins MUST be of the same sex.
Identical means the same as- if they only have different sex organs then that means they're different, therefore not identical.

To be identical the fertilized egg splints into 2 - therefore they twins have to be the same sex and make up.
Although it is interesting that you say that idendical twins might have to be identical! One of my friends has been told time and time again that her twins are identical - and they couldn't look more different! WIll have to look it up now! Maybe they are from the same egg - just developed at different rates?? Who knows! Biology was not a strong point!

Hi the answer is NO. Non- identical twins are conceived when 2 seperate eggs are fertilised by 2 seperate sperm. Whether the child is a boy or girl depends on whether the sperm is an X or Y chromosome. So obviously if there are 2 seperate sperm it is possible for them to both be X's, both be Y's or one of each. When you have identical twins, there is only 1 egg and 1 sperm involved. The egg is fertilised and then splits into 2 so the 2 babies share exactly the same egg and sperm. As the sperm can only be X or Y and both babies are from the same sperm they must both be male or both be female. It is impossible for them to be one of each.

No, in order for twins to be Identical they have to have been homed in the same sac before birth, have identical DNA and be of the same sex. Boy/girl sets are always fraternal. They do share DNA as any other siblings do.
(You may have to wait until after the birth or even until your twins become toddlers to discover whether they are identical. The simplest way to tell if twins are non-identical is the most obvious - boy-girl pairs are never identical)
Even twins of the same sex are not always identical and now tests are done to see if they are or aren't.

Identical twins come from one fertilised egg which has separated into two. This means the identical twins will be the same sex.

Identical twins arise when an egg splits in two so therefore must be the same sex. Non-identical twins arise when two different eggs are fertilized at the same time so this can be boy/girl girl/girl etc..your friend is wrong!

You may have to wait until after the birth or even until your twins become toddlers to discover whether they are identical. The simplest way to tell if twins are non-identical is the most obvious - boy-girl pairs are never identical and a clear scan in mid-pregnancy will show you what you want to know.

No, identical twins must be of the same sex because they were originally one cell. And that cel can't be of two genders. But, non-identical twins that do not come from the same cell still can look a lot like each other of course, but they're not identical.

identical twin are made up of one sperm and one egg, as the cells devide they split up making identical twins. since sperm decide the sex of the baby (x and y, think a womens egg is x and men have both x and y sperm if an x sperm attaches to a women egg its a girl and if its a y its a boy) and since two sperm cannot fertilize the same egg its impossable to have identical girl and boy twins. un identical twins are when two different eggs are fertilized, by two different sperm meaning you can have a boy and a girl. and as for them bein simular they do seem to have a close link being twins identical or not since they are brought up together and were in the womb together....very interesting
