No...go to a Muslim country it is quite "normal". Iv'e been to Malaysia it's a beautiful place and the people definately don't live backwards. Other Muslim countries as well. I think the reason why the west love to make such statements is beacuse the people live differently compared to the west. Just because the dress different etc...doesn't mean that they are backwards. The still have televisions, i-pods and practically anything the west has except for half naked women and pork etc...
And actually Muslims do question their religion and the funny thing about it is that they always get good, solid answers that make them more strong in faith. They are not only taught the Quraan, some are excellent scientists, accountants etc...

Depends on their education and income levels. The very poor and uneducated tend to learn their Koran by rote and have been thought not to question their religious teachers. But I am generalising here. There are plenty of issues that have been politicised on a world scale. Islam has been made the whipping boy of the 21st century .
One should practice tolerance, be humble and above all, be opposed to violence at all times. In this sense, the Mahatma ( Mohandas K Gandhi )was the most forward thinking man of the 20th century, and as a Hindu, he practised these virtues.
We need more leaders, philosophers and politicians such as the Mahatma to reinvigorate and energise the world.

This depends on the country and what aspect you are talking about. I am sure many of these countries are just as technologically advanced as the west.
When it comes to spiritual enlightenment I would say some countries are more tolerant than others. Turkey it seems tends to be more free and open compared to lets say Saudi Arabia, Iran, and yes still Afghanistan.
