I'd suggest that you look into the poems by Shel Silverstein. He wrote many funny, quirky, poems for children. I'd recommend his books "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic" in particular. Some are short, some are long, but all are fun.

Be the best at whatever you are
If you cant be a pine on the top of a hill
be a scrub in the valley but be
the best looking scrub on the side of the rill
be a bush if you cant be a tree
If you cant be a bush
be a bit of the grass
and some highway happier make
if you cant be a muskee
just be a bass
but be the liveliest bass in the lake!
We cant all be captains,we have to be crew.
Theres something for all of us here.
There is the big work to do and the less to do,
and the job you must do is the near.
If you cant be a highway just be a trail.
If you cant be the sun,be a star.
It isnt by size that we win or we fail
Just be the best at whatever you are!

Insectlopedia and In the Swim are 2 poetry books that my 8 yr old daughter loves. Insectopedia has funny insect poems and In the Swim has funny sea animal poems. While being funny, the poems also educates the reader about the animal or insect itself. Both books are written by Douglas Florian and are geared for that age range.
You can go to your local book store and go to the children's poetry section. They have ample poetry books for children. A poetry book is always good to have in a child's reading collection.
