hi, I use my work as a means to study society and ultimately myself.
A good starting point for this is reading some psychology i recommend some Freud and Karl Jung. Pick a subject that's controversial within society. Work out how you feel about the subject and go from there. My last one was on Nudity within art.

heres some more ideas:
Judgment
Index's (marks humans leave e.g. lipstick on a cigarette)
mask's (the persona we wear for others)
Sex within society
Sex within art
War
Modern Politics
Good and Evils (black and White)
Violence within the world
Your personal future
Romance
Treatment of animals
abortion
racism
sexism
ageism
bigotry

or you could pay homage to your favorite artists by creating pieces in their style. This is always fun, if you like Dali, I highly recommend painting in his style. Others that are fun are:
Andy Warhol
Tracey Emin
Lucien Freud
Vangogh
Pablo Picasso
Matisse
Egon Schiele
Also photo realism painting is always fun but takes alot of patience.
Check out Richard Estes and Chuck Close. The link below will take you to lots of photo realists

The greatest direction for anyone's art is in the direction of your interests. Ask yourself, what do I enjoy the most? Paint it. If you cannot decide on that, then ask, When I was 7, I really liked to ________. Paint it.
