While America could be seen in some parts as the Whore of Revelation, American is more a secular country with religious people living here. Rome, pointing to the Vatican, is more a religious country first than secular. Also Rome has always been a major opponent of Jerusalem, pointing to different gods, religons and faiths. I believe that because America is secular, it isn't a major player in prophecy outside of turning away from Israel so that she stands alone in the end times.

The Harlot or Whore as you refer to is not a woman but is is a nation. Read the book of Revelation and if you have a relation with JESUS pray for understanding, HE will give it to you. It is definetely not America. I would tell you, but you will have to find it out for yourself.

I think the harlot is the religion that follow after the Antichrist!
It seems that she rides the back of the beast, so if the beast is say the UN then the UN is somehow funding this religion, and the UN hates it, and will get its chance to destroy this religion!

I think it is both. The writer of Revelation had to appeal to the audiance of that time, but at the same time he/she would have to appeal to future audiances.
