Well there is a big word out there called "hermeneutics." It is the way we read and interpret the Bible. One of the biggest problems with interpreting the Bible is bad Hermeneutic skills. One of the first, and most important things to keep in mind when reading the Bible is, you should read it for authorial intend. What did the author mean, what is he saying? But a lot of people use "reader response." That is they read a verse and say "what does this verse mean to me?" Now they may or may not interpret the same meaning that they author intended, but chances are high that they will be way off.

It is also helpful to be able to understand, and recognize all the different types of literary genre in the Bible like; narrative, poetry, parable, allegories, letters, etc...

GOD doesn't call upon literary skills. All HE wants us to do is pray, read the BIBLE and keep an open mind and listen to what he tells you that the BIBLE means. I know that is hard now a days, Listening, that is. A lot of people have their own beliefs about things and if we would listen to GOD more often, we might not be in the situation we are in today.

I highly suggest that you read "By What Authority" by Mark P Shea. And read the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read The Early Fathers of the Early Church. There are hundreds of Christian bibles out there, some aren't Christian at all. I read from Catholic Bibles, I have the New American Bible now. The catholic bible is word for word from the Hebrew bible. The words are translated word for word. Other Christian bibles have words, verses and chapters removed, some additions that were never in the Hebrew bible and some have personal interpretations from the man that wrote it. The Catholic Bible is from the original writings from the ancient Hebrew bible and from the apostles themselves. Christian bibles have things added/removed from men that lived within the past 200 years. They have many errors.

The book "By What Authority" tells you the history of the Catholic Church and bible.

I believe that the Holy Spirit is our guide, I would not call this a skill, but rather a gift that is available to a born again believer who has accepted the greatest gift, that was ever given, the fact that God sent His Son Jesus to the cross, for my sins and yours.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from death, resides in His believers, to reveal His Word. Not for our wisdom, but for His kingdom, and His glory.

So many times, you hear of people, picking up a Bible, reading some verses, then saying that that it did not make any sense to them. I believe that without discernment, it is impossible to understand God's word. But God's word is, also, so simple that children understand it. You can't put God or His Word inside a box.

Grace and Peace!

I believe what has been written in the Bible by the Lord, HE must have thought it carefully of not making it too difficult to read and understand to HIS followers.
Whatever this is the Lord's way to teach HIS followers.

God allegedly gave us free will which is how the fanatics answer the question, 'why does God allow bad people to do bad things?'
So if we have this free will, surely that means we have the ability to interpret what the Bible and other texts say and apply it to our own lives rather than slavishly following every word in the literal sense?

Yes I do, and God taught me from scripture. While hermeneutics is a good start, its the process that many fumble. The true hermeneutics that scripture teaches is a Torah point of view. The only path to take to gain a proper Torah persprective is the same one that Solomon took so many years ago.

You see, Solomon was just a young man when he became King of Israel. But rather than just take the reigns and start being a king, he saught out God for wisdom and understanding. God gave him what he asked for, and later Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs.

What many do not understand is to gain the proper understanding in which to study and gain knowledge from scripture, one must study Proverbs. For Proverbs is the pure wisdom of God. It teaches how to understand things from God's perspective. In short, it changes one's world completely.

Once armed with the knowledge and wisdom of Proverbs, the rest of scripture becomes an open book. Proverbs is the only true process of hermeneutics we are to use to understand scripture.

But humans tend to be stuck in their own tradtions rather than seek truth from God. So humans will use other types of hermeneutics, like what is used today which is based on Greek methodology, and ends up with wrong interpretations and understandings.

To separate the truth from the lies, how to misinterpret a book, how to cross reference the contradictions, to think up a better and newer version, to believe in the unbelievable, to take everything literally, to believe that the greatest trick that satan has played on you was the introduction of religion, to believe in fairy tales and last but not least to argue with all of the other fools who dont agree with you.
