Now I not real sure on this. But a friend has some land he raise pines to sell. They are first planted thick. What this does, is cause them to fight for sunlight and they try to out grow each other for the sun. I will also cut down on knots in the wood as the lower branches die early and fall off. As the trees begin to get bigger you thin some of the losers in the battle for sunlight. This process is repeated over the years until you have the trees spaced as you want. Most that grown for lumber are spaced to about 5-10 feet apart (I think) this allows for good big trees with a small amount of limbs producing less knotty lumber. This how he explained it to me after his dad explained it to him. If you want fat shorter trees with lots of limbs you have to space them further apart from the start and keep grass mowed until they tall. Short and simple. You may be able to try things like fertilizer and regular water in dry times to help promote big healthy trees. Your County Extension Office can help and it free.
