As a collector of data for "The Family Tree" I am aware how important it is to catologue history, however significant for future generation. The politically correct brigade are making this virtually impossible. Before telling me about the bad element in our society. Do not my grandchildren have a right to be part of our history?

It's terribly sad that we even feel the need to ask such a question. In my view you have a total right. They are your grandchildren, and only a true pervert would think ill of it. I often think that schools deliberately over-react in these situations in order to draw attention to the kinds of problems they have to face daily, particularly with regard to 'over the top Health & Safety issues', and other Politically Correct Goverment and EU edicts.

By doing this they can garnish public support for other similar issues, such as the PC brigades refusal to let Teachers even touch pupils, let alone dicipline them. My sympathy for teachers however, is limited, because it is left wing ideaology which, unfortunately, most of them seem to subscribe to, that has encouraged this kind of PC nonsense in the first place. They probably understand now that some of their ideaology has come home to roost in the form of a dose of reality.

Incidently, I don't think that you need sophisticated reasons for taking photographs, I think that you have a right, full stop. Also, the Courts need to throw out the more ridiculous and spurious compensation claims, because this has become an excuse for extreme defensiveness. It is also sad, that some of your respondents seem to want to justify these kinds of restrictions. Don't they understand that trying to be 100% safe, involves endless impositions on our freedoms.

On your own premesis, or in a public place, you can snap away (so long as you're not a perv into child porn). However, due to the current hysterical political climate, when you are on privately owned premesis, e.g. swimming baths, schools, etc. there may be rules against taking pictures. While it is not ILEGAL, they can ask you to leave if you do not obey the rules. If you refuse to do so, you then become a trespasser (as they have taken away the implied consent for you to be there) and can be escorted off by force/ the police/ both.

While we do have the responsibility to protect children, we should also have the sense to let ordinary folk get on with their lives. Innocent until proven guilty, last time I checked. It seems that common sense is pretty uncommon these days.

You can spot most paedophiles a mile off - their trousers are half way up their chest and they have a worrying smile... oh and one hand down their pants!

I am not sure about actual RIGHTS. But in public and your home etc. you can take photographs. Obviously if it were discovered that you were using these photos for sexual gain/pleasure or whatever, in some way, there would then be laws covering this misuse.

On private premises - ie school/swimming pool etc. they have become hysterical in case you take a photograph of your child/grandchild and then use it on porn site!!!!

Don't they realise that it would not be that difficult for ANYONE (who wanted to) to quite easily get pics of the kids entering and leaving school and at play in the school playgrounds etc.

So, click away when you can and good luck with the family tree.

Most schools permit the taking of pictures during assemblies etc, but do ask that you sign a register to say you are doing so only for photo album purposes, and that you will not take an individual picture of any child but your own, and all group shots you take will include your child. I know our school allows grandparents this same priveledge over their grandchildren.

Yes your grandchildren do have a right. But more importantly you have a responsibility to keep them safe. These rules were not introduced by the PC brigade, they were introduced by schools who appreciate they are a magnet for those who would harm children.

I quite agree with you. Perverts will take pictures regardless. We can't stop them. Most parents at school are not perverts however and we need some common sense. Hysterical parents overreact so. Even if a pervert did get a picture of my child, well, that's their problem. They could just as easily cut one from a magazine. It's distasteful, but cannot harm the child.

What exactly does political correctness have to do with images of your grandchildren. I think you need to rephrase your question.

the question SHOULD be what right have they to stop you taking photo's - these aren't pornographic images (im not insulting your question just political correctness) a few years back taking pictures at these events was normal

I believe you can take photo's of any one.and you would only be breaking the law if you were to set up you photographic equipment on a public highway.Celebrates are being photographed all the time legally, to their annoyance.
