Nyquil is not a sleep aid. It's for colds and flu, and should be avoided if you are having a hard time sleeping. The alcohol in it is what makes most people sleepy, so save yourself the extra medicine, and just have a regular alcoholic nightcap if you want to go that route.
Don't use Tylenol PM unless you have associated pain. All it is is Tylenol with the active ingredient from Benadryl added, and a bottle of it will cost you more than two bottles of Benadryl. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is what we are talking about, and it is often marketed as a sleep aid, rather than as a decongestant. Several doctors have told me it is one of the best OTC sleep aids, and you don't even have to buy it as Benadryl, which is a brand name, so more expensive. You can get a bottle of it in generic form, like under a house brand name (such as Walgreen's or Savon drugs) for like $5 for a 100ct. 25 mg bottle. Start at 25 mg a night, and then if that doesn't work, you can try taking 50 mg a night. I think 50 mg is the usual dosage as a sleep aid, but you should start out at 25 mg first, because a lot of people are very sensitive to it and it knocks them out.
If you do have pain, still skip the Tylenol PM. Buy regular Tylenol, and cheap diphenhydramine hydrochloride, and it will cost a lot less.

Tylenol PM. The Tylenol potentiates the benedryl and makes it a great, non-habit-forming sleep aid. I used it for a while when learning to sleep in the daytime, because I work all night.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Red wine, bourben, rum. Sex if you can get it. When I am lacking in these I go for the Nyquil. Benedryl wakes me up again 4 - 5 hours later; I mean wide awake, heart racing, eyes practically pinned open.

Herbal....it's called Valerian extract (capsules...not the drop form).
It helps you relax and fall asleep better. You take two capsules and the effect is felt about one hour later.
