Start meditating... There are many available like Wayne Dyre, Budhdhist, Brian Weiss etc...search on google/yahoo you will get info for these.
Other which I have practiced are... Art of living (www.artofliving.org) meditation, Osho meditation (He devised many, around 108 so you have various option) etc etc...
Well, there is one suggestion which I liked (conscious decision) by Wisebonzai's...
Meditation will help you doing that (conscious decision).
Otherwise, listen to soothing music while sleeping... preferrably slow... like Sitar of Pandit Ravi Shankar, tibbetian Budhdhist chants... etc
Hope anyone of these will help you get out of these dreams....
At last, if you believe in something called rebirth please visit www.brainweiss.com. Dr. Brian Weiss. I do not want to insist on this but browssing one site is ok... as we unncessarily surf on net and do nothing. So, why not read something that may be helpful sometimes.
Please do not think that what I am saying is good over other, I have written all this based on my experience and understanding (except Wayne Dyre have read little part of "Manifest your destiny") ... I do not intend to hurt anyones sentiments or belief. Further, I am not a Buddhist, rather I am a spiritual but not religious person.

I have recurring dreams where I'm in the middle of telling someone off, or if I'm trying to explain something very important, then suddenly it's like I run out of breath and I end up stammering and the more I try to talk, the more difficult it gets. I think I know why I have these recurring dreams-- I hate confrontation and usually bottle things up for too long. I also dream about the same shopping mall and my old highschool. I have many lucid dreams, where I can basically control everything that's going on, but I only have those dreams if I sleep too long, which isn't very often!

If you are able to talk to the nightmare in your dream, do so. I know it will sound weird, but sometimes confronting it in the dream may actually work. It's like talking to something in your subconscious mind and it helps you feel more confident going to sleep. Most times, dreams like that are about something in real life that's been bothering you for a long time and you haven't been able to face it. Now is the time. I can't say it will be easy, but try. Also, writing down your dreams or talking to a trusted friend is a good way to get those feelings out.

IF it is reoccurring then you know it is a dream and harmless to you. When you have it again try to not be influenced by it and interact with it. Chances are once you do this without fear of it then it will pass. Bad experiences that we have repressed are exposed through our subconscious in the form of dreams. It is the bodies way of releasing harmful experiences from our subconscious memory. We call this homeostasis and there are many many forms of this that our body automatically does to keep us healthy. If it continues to reoccur then you're going to need to talk with a psychologist about it so he help you understand what in your past happened to you that is disturbing you now. That's what's going on and they can help you without medication in most instances through therapy.

it wont go away till you deal w/ whatever ur subconcious is trying to tell you. maybe just understanding the dream will help. I would like to know what your dream is. a really good dream interpretation site is www.dreammoods.com , look up every symbol you can remember from it then try to piece together what the overall meaning is.
Lucid dreaming is when you are dreaming and know you are dreaming to the point you can control it, but it takes practice. and it is tough to overcome the fear to stay w/ the dream. But if you can do it then you can change it to something pleasant or confront whatever it is.

Yes.
You have to make a conscious decision to notify yourself that you are dreaming and then to change it during the dream into what it should be...a positive dream.
You can also make a conscious decision that the second you know it's a dream, while you are dreaming, you will either change the dream to something else, or wake yourself up.
It works. I've tried it.
Good luck!

yes. dream diary and meditation.
You MUST talk to yourself before you sleep and tell yourself you are strong. And THIS (whatever you want to happen) will happen and I will do _________ this. I will wake up when I see that scene. I will say in my dream "this is a dream, I am going to wake up now". It took me 3 months of doing that to watch the dream evolve into an actually funny dream. Best of luck...but you must be consistent and tell yourself you are powerful and you get to be the director of all of your dreams. Your brain will listen, I promise!

Think of something positive and uplifting? Whenever you think of good things during the day, you should dream of good things. Bad dreams often have to do with anger, or stress... just negative stuff

Find out what you are dreaming about.
Write down every detail, and see if this relates to your life. If it does then try to fix what the dream is implying to.
Dreams are sometimes messages our subconsious is sending ourselves/
