I've never really cooked for more than 15-20 and usually that's like one dish. Now I need to do the whole thing for 50. The rice is a side dish so what quantity should I cook (preferrably in "cups" of dry rice.)

When rice is the main dish its 1/2 cup per adult male and 1/3 for females. Whn its going to be just a side dish you can measure 1/4 cup per head and add an extra cup full.
13 cups for 50 people will do.

Make 1/4 to 1/2 cup per person. It's a side dish you don't want them to fill up on just the rice!

with rice, if you use 2 parts water to 1 part rice, heat until it comes to boil, turn to low heat & stir occasionally until all the liquid is gone, it should be cook perfectly. You can always check by eating a little bit to see if it's crunchy or not. Potatoes, use a small knife & check to see if there is any resistance or not, if no resistance, it's cooked. With meat the best way is to use the temperature, search online for the temps, but can be checked with temperature probe. depends on what your cooking as to how to check if it's cooked or not...

i was told and have tried it that 4 oz (dried weight) of rice per person so multiply that by 20 gives u 80oz which works out
about 6 lb's of rice

if you ever cook for yourself this is were the 4 oz comes from and its a generous portion per person (this also works for pasta)

To prepare one cup of rice per guest is ideal. 50 guests equals 50 cups.
