Hydroquinone is a popular one. It is a prescription drug for the treatment of many disorders of skin coloration. But it is available in some markets without a prescription. Risks include permanent skin discoloration of a bluish/black color, or temporary skin irritation and discolorment (red and itchy).

Also concerning is the combination of hydroquinone with retinoids (vitamin-A_ products. These have been shown to cause birth defects in some cases.
