Certainly! It has been documented, particularly with German Shepherds, who are one of the most intelligent breeds around. There is one man featured on videos who was amazing with the mental commands his dog responded to.
I know it works here at our shelter, on a much simpler basis. Haven't you ever planned to sneak a pill, or bathe a dog, or take the animal to the vet, only to turn around and the dog has vanished? :-) They *know*, the crafty little things, no matter how you try to disguise what you're up to.
We all know how they tune into our moods and "read" us. And they can certainly tune you out when they want to :-) .
I personally think we're the ones who need to learn to tune into their thoughts, feelings and actions. We would understand each other a lot better.
I have also had tremendous rapport with two long-term dogs that were special to me, to the point that words weren't necessary on occasion. I don't feel everyone can do this, as many people are very "busy-minded" these days. But for those of us fortunate enough to have time to relax with our animals, all things are possible.

Yes, I have tried to talk to my dogs telepathically. I have no proof that they understand, but I feel that they know that I'm trying to communicate. I have learned to read the expressions on my dog's face and feel that we can communicate just by looking at eachother. Is that telepathic? I'm not sure. But I believe that they can read our "vibes" and know if we are a good person and have good intentions, or if someone is a bad person. It would be nice to unlock the mysteries of the mind. Maybe someday we will know.

No. Dogs can't do telepathy any better than humans. I can't communicate with my boyfriend across the room with only my mind.
But that doesn't mean they can't read body language. dogs can sometimes appear almost human and appear to be psychic, but they're just perceptive living things. Since dogs have limited communicative vocal skills they watch their owners every eye and hand movement for signs of stress to percieve their mood.
If i were to glare and shout...the glare comes off as a negative thing....so a dog knows to run and hide if he sees one....it's that kind of thing. And since people are animals too(most people forget), they have a complex form of non-verbal/mostly unconscious commands that dogs can understand...and any good poker player.

I think every obedience competator on the planet has tried it when the dog is WAY over on the other side of the ring & on the verge of blowing it and you are not allowed to speak to remind them of what they are supposed to do - sometimes it works, sometimes not

I loved and still love my dog and had to let him rest eternally days before my birthday this summer. It was awful. I sometimes try to concentrate on him many times wondering if he knows how much I want him back and how I would like to communicate with him. I believe he knows in some ways that I love him and want to communicate with him. He was my family and a living gift that God allowed me to have. I miss my doggy!

I believe it does.
It is otherwise difficult to figure out what they need, or want from us (the ones they depend on for sustinance, shelter, and affection). If my dog seems down in the dumps, or distracted, I put her head in my hands, and look her in the eyes. Then, I give her a hug, or pet her. Of course, the petting is always a good thing to do. I simply think we need to connect in other ways with our beloved pets. (it makes them feel more connected to us - I believe).

No I haven't. I probably don't want to know what he is thinking. He is a 7 month old German shepherd named Jack. With a nick name of ooggy wooggy and telling him he is the "baby" all the time he probably has a few choice words for me. I think at times he gives me the look of oh please make her stop.

I test my hounds often, they have remarkable ESP!
the other night, I decided to test my Phaedre..I was washing dishes, and saw a piece of meat i thought she would like..on the counter..She was under the table, about 14 feet away..acting as if asleep..I said..in my mind."".Phaedre, I'll bet you would like this..come here.""..I still had my back to her, with my hands in the sink..and felt her bump the back of my leg..LOL..Good girl! Yep, she got the treat..
This breed does that all the time..just blows me away!

I just did. I gave both my dogs the look of death and they settled down and finally fell asleep! I mean geesh! It's almost midnight and these two wing nuts are still playing!
