It all depends upon the manufacturer of the the product. According to me in digital cameras u try Nikon or Canon. Whereas in handy cams try about Sony.

it depends on what you want to do, digital cameras are designed for still images and the video feature in some cameras is at best low quality. Handy cams are the opposite ,video is dvd quality these days but the still image setting in some cameras is capable of average quality pictures

If by handy cam you mean a camcorder well...depends for what you need. A camcorder is designed to record a movie and is not so good for photography. And the reverse ...a camera is good for photography but not for movie. :-) of course a salesman will claim that you can do photos with a camcorder and record movie with a camera ...but the quality is so lowwwwww....yet
I am using Lumix FZ-30 which is able to record movie in 640x320 and I can use the optical zoom during the recording + auto focus. This resolution is good for an average quality TV movie mode but any current camcorder will do the job (movie) much ...much ... better...

Digital Cameras are better for taking still images, but have a video capability.

Video cameras are better for taking videos, but have a still image capability.

Each one is good for what they do best. Decide what your priority is, and then get the appropriate type of camera.

It all comes down to personal usage. If you want to take snaps and share among friends and families and an occasional short clip, then camera would solve your problem. If you want to move a step forward, then handy cam.
