My 3 and a half year old son has red bumps on his hands and belly mostly that itch really bad. They itch worse at nights it seems. They have come and gone for the last 3 weeks. He has seen 2 doctor's and they don't know what it is. Should I take him to a specialist or does anyone out there know what it could be? And how to get rid of it? Oatmeal baths make him feel better and calomine lotion provides pretty much instant relief. I'm not sure that benedryl does anything for him. Just when we think he's over it, it comes back.

I would take him to a dermatologist.

I'm assuming his doctor would have ruled out the common infectious conditons (ie fungal, viral or bacterial), so it may be necessary for them to examine him in more detail and take a skin scraping so that they can look at it under the microscope.

Have you considered if he is allergic to something his hands are coming into contact with? Or could it be a contact dermatitis?

Otherwise it may be an immunological conditon.

Regardless, i feel it is necessary to have it checked up.

Good luck!

Perhaps a form of contact dermatitis. Stop using fragrant dryer sheets and washing soaps including for clothes. Eliminate any wheat and keep a journal if he still has these symptoms after drinking milk. Does he play in grass or do you have a pet he comes in contact with? Continue the oatmeal baths and don't use Calamine! Try aloe vera. Any ointments and/or meds can be trans dermal meaning they penetrate the skins layer and can be harmful. Ask for a reference to a Dermatologist from your Pediatrician if not resolved.

sounds just like maybe he is allergic to some new soap you are using....an allergic reaction...get some baby sween cream for the rash..he could have roseola...take him to a dermatologist and don't be too eager with the benedryl unless you have really researched the side effects of it..see if there are some new clothes or something he is wearing and being exposed to...a new pet, anything in the last month different he could be having an allergic reaction too...poor baby

Hmm that's weird. Sounds like he's having a reaction to something...maybe laundry soap or fabric softener. Try washing his clothes & bedding in that Ivory laundry soap for babies and maybe that'll help. Good luck!

Sounds like he got either ringworm or scabies. This could have been from other children. Mention it to the doctor cause scabies needs a special prescription lotion. Ringworm can have come from a cat, lotrimin lotion or other athlete's foot ointment works. Really should ask the doctor as he is so little.
