Male Muslims can marry women from "the People of the Book", i.e. Christians and Jews, but Muslim women are expected to marry Muslims, because of the simple fact that at the time when Islam was started, children took on their father's religion.

And Christians are one of the most established and respected communities in the Arab world. My aunt is a Christian, and frankly she is better respected than most of my other greedy, jealous aunts. To those who think all Muslims are crazy zenophobes, I suggest you get your head out of your @ss and look in a mirror.

A Muslim man may marry a Christian or Jewish wife becuase they are "people of the book" and are considered believers who have a distorted view of their religion that came over time. Muslim women however are warned against it, as the religion of children is usally basd on the religion of the husband.

Yes a muslim may marry a christian, infact may parents a married and my Dad is a Musilm and my mum just believesin God and the values of the Qur'an but is yet prepared to fully convert. But from my standpoint a muslim woman can marry a non-muslim like a muslim man, this is also from the standpoint of the Qur'an scholars that I follow and from my Imam. This common misconception is advocated and promoted by men but have no basis in the Qur'an. Qur'an gives both men and women the right to marry from the people of the book, i.e. Muslims (Submitters), Jews or Christians or from believers in God. God also reminds us that the marriage to a believer is much better than the marriage to an idolworshiper. See 5:5 and 2:221.
"[2:221]. Do not marry idolatresses unless they believe; a believing woman is better than an idolatress, even if you like her. Nor shall you give your daughters in marriage to idolatrous men, unless they believe. A believing man .is better than an idolater, even if you like him." (it does not say anywhere that there is a double standard for men and women, a believer can be either a Muslim or just somenone who believes in God.)
"Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you." (in terms of marriage and there is on double standard)
It goes on to say this..."Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor .taking secret lovers" (but again nowhere does it say that women are forbidden from marrying in non-Muslim men who are believers in God or of the Scripture).
Marriage in the Qur'an is of equal proportion and restriction for men and women, it does not actually say in the Qur'an that women can't marry outside of Islam, people just read this inbetween the lines or take the words of men in the haddiths over the Final word and haddith of God, the Qur'an.

only a man can marry a christian woman (must be chaste), but the woman can't so that she can keep her children Muslims.

here is a Question that was asked on islamqa.com:

Why is it not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a kaafir man

Question:
It is permissible for Muslim men to marry women who are not Muslim, so why are Muslim women not permitted to marry men who follow a religion other than Islam?

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible for a Muslim man to marry a woman from among the People of the Book, a Jewish or Christian woman, but not a woman from any other kaafir religion, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Made lawful to you this day are At-Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halaal (lawful) foods, which Allaah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits)]. The food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals) of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them. (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before your time when you have given their due Mahr (bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage)…”

[al-Maa’idah 5:5]

This refers to chaste women from among the People of the Book, not immoral women. It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a mushrik who is not a Muslim, no matter what his religion is. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikoon till they believe (in Allaah Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater), even though he pleases you. Those (Al-Mushrikoon) invite you to the Fire…”

[al-Baqarah 2:221]

And because Islam should prevail and not be prevailed over, as is stated in the religion of Islam.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Kareem al-Khudayr

It is known that the man is the stronger party and the one who dominates the lives of the family, his wife and children. So it is not wise for a Muslim woman to marry a kaafir man who will dominate her life and the life of her children, the consequences of which will be very serious, as there is the possibility that he may divert her from her religion and raise the children in his own religion.

And Allaah knows best.
