It does increase your chances of getting cancer, mainly because extra weight restricts circulation and cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen to cells.

Obese people have higher risk of getting tumors than non obese people. This is specially true for esophageal (food pipe) breast and colon cancers. Also, being obese makes it much more difficult tolerate treatments like surgery and chemotherapy. chemotherapy is usually given on the basis of patients height and weight. In obese people, the weight is so much that thy may end up getting excess chemo. also, some chemo drugs accumulate in fat, leaving little to actually kill the cancer. There is strong data to suggest that chances of tumor recurrance after surgery are also higher for obese people who dont exercise.

define "tumor".

You can certainly get a "fatty turmor" which isnt' cancer, but rather a clump of fat cells that have clustered together.

And, as pointed out, obese people do tend to have a higher cancer rate, for whatever reasons.

According to American Cancer Society, overweight and obesity may account for 20% of all cancer deaths in US women and 14% in US men.

It was found that the heaviest men in the study conducted, had death rates from all cancers combined that were 52% higher than the rates among normal-weight men. The heaviest women had cancer death rates 62% higher than normal-weight women.

Overweight and obesity has been linked to cancers of the uterus, kidney, esophagus, gallbladder, colon and rectum, and breast (in postmenopausal women). The researchers also found that many types of cancer that were not previously linked to obesity were, in fact, affected by excess body weight. Those included cancers of the liver, pancreas, prostate, cervix, ovary, and stomach (in men), as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

The researchers speculate that obesity acts on cancer by raising the body's levels of hormones: sex hormones like estrogen, or protein hormones like insulin, and insulin-related growth factors. These hormones may, under circumstances, stimulate the development and growth of cancer cells.

Being overweight certainly corresponds to a 20% higher rate of cancer, but this does not necessarily imply that being overweight is a partial cause of cancer.

If you are overweight, you CAN alleviate many other health problems (heart disease, diabetes, acid reflux, etc) by losing weight and exercising.
