The book I am studying briefly explains that naru is a form of Japanese religion that deals with primordial time and eternity. Can anyone explain what naru is?

I'm Japanese, and I don't think the word "naru" means a form of Japanese religion. Are you sure the spelling is correct?

Naru means:

1) sound, ring, strike, chime, blow
ex. The bell is ringing. I heard the clock strike three.

2) comprise, consist of, composed of
ex. Japan is comprised of four main islands.

3) bear fruit or flowers
ex. This tree bears fruit well.
