War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stuart Mill

The J.S. Mill qute you provide is good, but it does not follow that, if having nothing worth fighting for is bad, then being willing to fight for anything is good. We should be very circumspect over what we'd go to war, and I think most people who are against the current war in Iraq were and are for the war in Afghanistan.

Exactly what is America fighting for right now? Are you going to teach those ex-freedom fighters that just because they could wear down the Soviet Union doesn't mean that they can wear down the good ol' USA....I believe that you will lose this war because it is a war against an idea. Nobody but the terrorists are having any fun right now......though I might be wrong there. Your politicians said that this was nothing like Viet Nam and they are absolutely right....this is way worse than Viet Nam because there is just no end to this at all!! The longer you are there the more they will hate you...and kill you...and when and if you do finally leave....they will kill each other.

The U.S. was always divided by war. There were people in the colonies that backed the British during the revolution, there was rioting in New York during and because of the Civil War, there were Nazi supporters in WWII, it took a long time to get involved with WWI and WWII because there were so many isolationists, there were mass peace marches (funded by the KGB) during the Vietnam War, and the Korean war was probably stopped because of the lack of support on both sides.

Today the USS Houston, LA-class nuclear attack submarine left Port Klang Malaysia, a country with a Muslim majority in its population - they were here for 2 days, Vice-Admiral talkshop with local counterparts.

Earlier in June, the USS Ronald Reagan Strike Battle Group was also here in Malaysia - 3 days of sightseeing, shopping and bit of charity work for Malaysian orphanages.

This miserable creature like to think of America as a PEACEFUL country not a warring country. It is because of US military prowess that peace can be allowed to flourish and it has. And the next time I come across some US crew personnel in Kuala Lumpur twin towers, I'd walked up to them and say "Hi, it's a pleasure to see you guys here... in your uniforms".

Your question and your quote don't seem to go together. I'm all for defending my country. But that doesn't include preemptive attacks or being an aggressor. Remember Teddy Roosevelt? "Walk softly and carry a big stick". That's good advice.
