My husband is currently deployed in Iraq, he's set to get out of the Marines in July of next year. He'd like to reenlist, but only if he can stay in one place for at least 3 years (basically get out of the fleet and have a smaller chance of continually being deployed). He's already spoken with his career counselor about being a MEF instructor in Camp Pendleton but the hours are ridiculously long, and he would have to stay out in the field at least one out of every three days. He's been looking into it as much as he has a chance to while in Iraq, and I'm trying to find out as much information as I can here. Anyone know of something he can look into, even if it's in a different branch?

i got out of the marines last year and every person i knew who extended another four years regreted it especially with all the deployments going on in iraq not to mention other conflicts that could come up like iran, if he can get orders to be an instructor or something like that, that can be good if he wants to stay in but nothing in the military is set in stone there is always a chance of being deployed, if he stays in and gets to be instructor it will be better if were you live is close to where he works to spend as much time together as possible cause we all know the more time the better and like you said he can be in the field every once in a while

You know, that is something your husband really needs to look into, even though he is in the desert. And most times, people are on some sort of a leave status before the final day comes for discharge. He might be able to look into it more then if push comes to shove. Then he should sit down and present you with the options he has learned of. The thing about the military is that sometimes training is pretty specific. Not all branches have a need for what another branch trains for. Even though there is an option to change branches, there are still no guarantees of duty stations in any branch. You go where you are best suited for the needs of the military. That's what it is to be in the military. And you are the living epitomy of a military wife. I would be surprised to see a Marine transfer to another branch anyway. They are die-hard and Semper Fi is serious to them. What is it that makes him want to re-up. If it's for the love of the Corps, then looking into another branch may not be worth the time.

There are no guarantees of staying stateside in the military, no matter what he's been told... If he really loves the military, he can try reserves, but he still can get called up. And given the current political atmosphere worldwide, that's a pretty high likelihood. He can become an instructor, but any crisis pops up he could get deployed anyway. Good luck, and thank him for his blood, sweat and tears, from the people he represents! God protect him and your family.

I don't know if the Marines do it, but I know that the Army is doing stuff like that for folks who reenlist. They are really in need of people, and not just infantry. You both know about getting what you're "promised" in writing at MEPS, so I don't need to warn you about that. Good luck.
