Mark 16:16 says "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he that does not believe will be condemned". That is enough for me to believe that you should be baptized. Every conversion in the New Testament is accompanied by baptism. As for the thief on the cross, he died under the Old Testament law, the New Testament law did not begin until Jesus died.. Jesus told him he was saved, yes, but Jesus was still alive at this point and had that power. As for just doing good, we are not saved totally by works, but by the grace of God. You must believe, truly repent of your sins, and be baptized. I'm not sure if it is possible to be saved without being baptized, perhaps you can be if you just believe, but unless you have no access to water, then yes get baptized because it was commanded.

I was babtised by sprinkling of water when I was an infant. I changed denominations to a denomination that believed in adult babtism. I wondered about that question myself. I believe the main purpose of babtism is to proclaim yourself as belonging to Jesus. It symbolizes starting anew and washing away your sins. I believe you can be saved, and not have the opportunity or be confused about being babtised and will still be saved if you are a true follower of Christ. But if you are ashamed of being a Christian and fail to proclaim that you are a Christian, this is not a good sign that you are really a Christian. I hope that makes sense. I decided that I was never given the chance to decide to become babtised, and I felt that I could be babtised without denouncing my original babtism. I think you can be babtised repeatedly, but it's a ceremony that traditionally only happens once. First and foremost, be a follower of Jesus, worry about the Babtism after you are sure that you know Jesus.

Of course not, read your Bible--God only cares that we love him enough to respect him and live for him. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Baptism is not a requirement for heaven. It is simply a profession of faith. If you understands God's will for us, accept Jesus as Savior, repent for you sins, have a desire to be obedient to God's will and are willing to allow his will to change your life, then you should consider baptism. Read some of these scriptures about baptism and God's love.

being baptised just means that you have completed a step to becomeing closer to GOD... That alone won't save you from going to hell. You need to believe that JESUS is the risen son of GOD. believe in your heart and confess with your mouth. Romans 10 & 9

i do not think so bc being saved gets you into heaven but it is a way to let God and everyone else know that you are ready for the next step in the relationship and motivated to get closer to him and you are showing that you are washing yourself of your old self and being reborn but you have to be saved first in order to be baptised.
I hope this clears things up for you.

Baptism of water is not very important but, Baptism with Holy spirit is essential to enter in the Lord's everlasting Kingdom. Be ready to enter into the Kingdom.

Only those who come to God in The Way He proscribes will enter heaven. When one comes to God as He proscribes they are baptized in The Spirit. The act of physical baptizim is only a public demonstration of commitment to Faith in The Spiritual Baptizim that is The True Salvation, Which is God's free gift to all who come to Him in The Way.

No, as long as you live a good life, treating others as you wish to be treated.
IMHO, this applies especially to atheists, since most of them are nice to people simply because it is the right thing to do, not because they are making points for heaven. A just God will bring them to the head of the line.

Well considering that Jesus told the thief on the cross that he would be joining Him in paradise that same day, I don't think, not being baptized will send you to hell. How could the thief be baptized when he died on the cross also.

Your concern over a mythical "hell" is based on a flawed, man-made book. Rituals, such as baptism, are also nonsensical creations of men.
