There's many ways to do it ... mine was as follows:

(1) Take Kiwi polish. You don't need Parade Gloss, regular will do. Open it up, light it with a match or lighter. After a few moments, close the tin and put out the flames.

(2) Get cotton swabs. Put them in hot water. Squeeze the water out.

(3) Open the tin. Take cotton swabs and dip them in the polish. Rub in a circular pattern over the leather. Get an even coat over the boot.

(4) If you want to put a flame on your boot, the trick is to get an even flame. Adjustable high-flame lighters and blowtorches on low setting work better than candles. Whisk the boot over the flame lighly so there is a sheen to the boot (don't hold it over too long, or you'll set the boot on fire or have the polish burn off or run). You can actually skip (4) with no ill effects.

(5) Take cotton swabs (heat them soaked in a microwave) and run them in a circular pattern over the leather until you get a positive shine. Wear the boots for a few blocks to get the polish chunks out of the creases. Brush those out.

I'm sure others have their methods that work just as well.

Are you speaking of the process where you use a cigarette lighter to melt your shoe polish and then use it to polish your boots?

I have no idea. But I do know, when I was in, someone almost burned the barracks down doing that. We had burning shoe polish on the floor and on those wool blankets.

By the way, the key is to buff and buff until your boot is as smooth as glass. I never ignited the shoe polish and always had a great shine.

Back in the summer of 1965, I was at Cadet camp. I melted the polish by lighting it with a lighter. However I spilt it, and there were quite impressive flames coming up from the barracks floor! I was confined to barracks for a couple of days.
I sugget spit polish - that is use a good quality wax, and spit on it as you rub it in with a cotton swab. After, you buff with a buffer cloth. You keep buffing until you can see your face in the boot.

I think what you are talking about is this. You apply a coat of wax (polish) and then use a lighter to burn the wax and melt the wax and dye into the pores of the leather. It works ok but I think applying the wax, letting it sit for a few minutes and buffing the boot with a soft cloth works just as well.

Light a candle,
Then place a polish on on your shoe and spread it with fine cloth,
Place the polish shoe slightly over the flaming candle,
Wipe the burned part with a fine cloth in encircling pattern, and
That makes your boots burnshine.

put your polish on take a lighter over the polish until it soaks into the leather then use a damp (cold water) clean terry cloth rag and buff until a deep shine is complete or use neutral wax during the buffing using very small amount of wax.
