My wife and I adopted in Illinois through a private agency and paid roughly $20,000 all told. We have friends and family members who have also adopted, I think our fees were pretty average. International adoption is commonly more expensive.
Around here, even adopting through a governmental agency costs more that $300, WOW!
I believe Catholic Charities limits the fee to 10% of annual income. Yes, they do require income tax returns.
Keep in mind there is a tax deduction, but this comes after the fact. You will have to put up the money first and get it back through your tax return.

As some said it shouldn’t cost you too much, and if your willing to take a child that is a bit older that only increases getting a child sooner. I would look into some agency in your state or city they should be able to help you more. If your willing to take a child that is not of your race or multiracial that also will increase your chances of getting a child sooner. Good luck

My friends went through a private agency and paid $10,000. Just to get their names on a list. There were additional fees once the birth mother chose them and after the baby was born.
They wanted a newborn. That makes all the difference, I think.

Go take a look on www.adoptuskids.org to look at photos and descriptions of chilren waiting for loving parents. Also, if you click on the Resources button near the top, it will take you to a page full of useful information for those considering adoption.
Good luck! :)
