it's only safe to lose 2 lbs a week. Losing 13 lbs like that will only guarantee one thing-- 100% positive-- that you will gain it ALL back and more...This is because your metabolism has been messed up. I'm not trying to be ugly or mean-- It's just true. I know this from much experience since I suffered an eating disorder in my high school days. Start eating normally immediately to save your own life-- I beg you. Please.

True to a point. You generally lose a lot of water weight when you start dieting/working out. Keep your body in tune and revved up by eating smaller meals more often throughout the day. I usually eat 6 times a day and that way your body won't store anything to wait for it's next food replenishment...it knows that it can use the food you have given it immeidately because you will condition your body to know that it will be eating again soon. Combine that with a good weight training and cardio program and you will be on your way. Straight cardio isn't the answer either...you have to include weights!
Your body burns about 50 calories to maintain 1 pound of muscle...so increase your muscle to say, 6 pounds and you will be burning an extra 300 calories a day just to maintain that muscle! You will see big losses, but don't be surprised if it slows down when you start adding muscle, because that's what it should do. Good luck!

That is the harsh truth and the path to a better you!
the first 10-20 lbs is the easiest, but the rest is alot harder, because your body will plateau eventually..meaning your body will get used to and adapt to the things you are doing to it.
The only way to keep losing the weight is to periodize your diet, and switch things around on your body so it doesn't adapt, for example:
you were working out for the last month strictly on the treadmill 4 times a week for 45 minutes at a time..
1 week Avg. calories expediture: 1000 calories
2nd week avg. calories exp.: 900 calories... \
3rd week avg. calories exp.: 750 calories.
notice the pattern.
your body always adapts you must fool your body... so switch your exercises and cardio machines, doing intervals on a an eliptical trainer is excellent as well as running up the stairs for 10 flights is awesome too...
always try to fool your body

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. It's true! But don't give up! I'm a quitter after the first ten pounds! I get so used to stepping on the scale every other day and seeing that I've lost another pound, that when it's less then the half pound per day loss, I get discouraged and quit!

13 pounds is a lot -unless your very big- if you stick to it the right way-2 pounds a week give or take a pound or 2-will continue-and you'll do fine-just remember if you hit a plateau-don't fret-body needs to catch up again and it will in a week or so-exercise 20 min. a day low impact is the key and avoid the late night eating-but do treat yourself every now and then-like i just did tonight!

That's exactly right. If you were really fat to start with, the first 10 lbs. will just be water weight. But don't get discouraged. Keep on losing that weight. The lighter you get, the harder it will be but you can do it!!! And if you ever do get discouraged, just remember one thing to keep you going... nobody likes a fatty.... nobody.
