"Columbia" is a poetic informal title for the continent discovered by Christopher Columbia.

So Columbia is the capital city of the continent discovered by Columbia and named after Washington -- ergo Washington, (the Federal property district) of Columbia

Similar to this is a province in western Canada, British (as opposed to American or other country in North America) Columbia or B.C., just north of Washington State and Idaho.

The federal district was named the District of Columbia because Columbia was a poetic name for the United States used at the time.

*Note to other responder above mine: it was Christopher COLUMBUS, not Christopher Columbia...

Good night, and good luck. Col. Kurtz

There's always the dictionary to use for some things. Surprisingly, it is another word for USA.

NOUN:

The United States.

Columbia is the feminine latin version of Columbus, and was used to name a country, a province of Canada, and at least 3 principal cities in the USA ... in Missouri, S. Carolina, and Maryland. It is also the first word of CBS.
