i guess it depends on what you do with the cards. if you start gambling and it becomes an obsession or detrament to your health - mental or physical then yes, it's a sin. but if you use them for good....
It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard. The young soldier knew that it was Sunday. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk. Just then the sergeant came in and said, "Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?" the soldier replied, "I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord." The sergeant said, "Looks to me like you're going to play some cards!" The soldier said, "No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards." The sergeant asked in disbelief, "How will you do that?"
"You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.
The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments.
The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The Five is for the five virgins there were ten, but only five of them were glorified.
The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth and all that is in them.
The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.
The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives - the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth.
The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy. He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him.
The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.
The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.
The Queen stands for the Virgin Mother Mary.
The King stands for Jesus, for He is the King of all kings.
When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year.
There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each represents a week - 52 weeks in a year.
The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Each suit has thirteen cards - there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.
So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for." The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, "Soldier, may I borrow that deck of cards when you are through?"

IF you have a solid 40 cards that you know well, and can get along with, by all means go with 40. you've got more drawing power by having less cards. On the other hand, if there are certain cards that you can't do without, aside from the 40 you have, thats ok too, just make sure you make up for it. I use a 48 card deck myself, because of those must have cards, but i don't rely on cheap cards like most people do these days or i could probably cut down to 40. I think its all about a matter of preference, personally.

I've never heard of the song.
I am not a Christian.
However.....my parents are Christians and they don't prefer that a deck of cards be out on the kitchen table, when people from the Christian church stop by for coffee. However, my parents did teach me how to play cards, and I love to play poker.
No Limit Texas Hold'em is my favourite game. I have no idea if it's a sin or not. I gamble...sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. It's just for fun and it balances itself out.
Monopoly and Backgammon however, are definitely against my religion. Very evil games! (I'm kidding on this part obviously, but what's up with that?) If there is something written in the Bible about a deck of cards being sinful....please e-mail me.

I have heard the song and have no problems with it. I have heard a lot about cards, I know some Christians that wont allow them because they believe that it will lead to gambling, others believe that the cards were invented to mock Christianity. I have found no foundation for either. I have played different card games all my life and never gambled- not even M&M's LOL - you make the choice. As for the mocking- well- I have never heard or seen anyone use them for htat purpose and in researching I have not found anyone that could say for sure. It is a game just like any other game- I play for entertainment, having fun with family members, no games I play are disrespectful to God or other people.
It is a thing, an object, and loosley termed a tool- like money- I am tired of hearing people misquote money is the root of all evil- it is the LOVE of money- cards are cards- nothing more nothing less, it is what is in your heart and what you do with them as a result that is the problem.
God Bless!

I don't think that playing cards is wrong, I do think gambling is. But, I also think that by playing cards you run a risk of becoming addicted, like as in alcohol consumption. Drinking wine, or beer is not wrong, but you also run a risk of being an alcoholic if it is in your genes. Am I making any sense here, it's not the acts themselves that are wrong, but rather how they can affect you that could be. Taking that first drink (Alcoholic), playing that first game of poker(Gambling), smoking that first cigarette or experimenting with weed (Addiction). We never know for sure who will fall victim to any of these afflictions. This is why we have to be careful and responsible with the choices we make. God Bless!!

I love cards, and have been playing poker since I was about 7 years old. Gambling is not a sin. Gambling to excess, not meeting your financial responsibilities, or stealing or carousing, these things that are associated with gambling are more sins than the gambling itself.

Yes, I have heard "deck of cards". In my opinion it has absolutley nothing to do with playing cards or poker. It is the lesson in the song, a bit metophorical. However, a Southern Baptist may say different, as they do not believe in playing cards, dancing, etc.

My opinion-
Cards aren't bad (unless they are for supernatural purposes) and gambling isn't bad unless you put yourself in sore straights to do it or are addicted. I think the biggest problem is greed. But I watch poker sometimes and cards with firends is a great saturday night.

I don't think that playing cards are bad. But in my youth, I was adopted by strict Fundamentalist Christians whose church forbid all games, especially those involving cards. Time spent playing games was time that wasn't being spent worshiping God, so games were banned. Cards were called "tickets to hell" and were absolutely forbidden. They said that the joker was a cruel parody of Jesus Christ, and that cards were invented specifically to make fun of the Christian faith. Church members were urged to burn any decks of cards that might be in their possession.

I haven't heard the song (that I know of) but I know there are those that think its a "crime". Personally, I play cards often enough and don't think there is anything wrong with it. Its your behaviour that makes it right or wrong. Its no sin in my book.
