A carbine is simply a shorter version of a rifle. Traditionally these were for non-frontline troops (i.e. artillery) and for mounted troops. During the civil war for example the two band vs. three band enfield was a good example of a carbine. In WWII the M-1 carbine was as shorter , lighter, firing a smaller cartridge than the M-1 Garand which was the main battle rifle. Today the M-16 is the main battle rifle and the M-4 is the carbine version.

Bound's hubby here:

A carbine is a rifle, where the barrel is less than 20 inches in length. A carbine is a quick handling, easily moved about, rifle (the short barrel contributes to the quick handling).

A carbine is the shortened version of a rifle or assault rifle to make it more compact, lighter and to make futher improvements. This means that without the rifle, there can never be a carbine of that rifle. e.g. M4A1 carbine is the shortened version of the M16A2.
