Ugly and gross? You come across as "ugly and gross" on the inside. You would be doing them a favor if you turn them down.

Is it that this person is ugly and gross on the outside or on the inside? Think about that for a moment.
If you really don't want to go with this person, just tell them the truth, that you don't want to go with them, or you could say that you're keeping your options open and will make a decision later.

There's really no easy way to let somebody down. We all know that you aren't going to sit this person down and talk to them about how you don't like them and all that ****. I think one of the easiest and nicest ways is to, simply put, lie. Tell them that you are busy, or you already have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Good luck!

A part from lying, all you have to do is say, "I am flattered and think that is nice that you want me to go with you, but I think I am going to alone this time." Tell them that you are single and looking and that you don't want to appear like you are taken.
