I've seen so many people on here that can't spell or use correct grammar! It is rather appalling.

I know exactly how you feel. I am a writer and it drives me bananas to see how much people butcher the English language on here.

I think a part of the problem might be all this technology. Especially, people using computers and cellphones because they like to make "shortcuts" in typing words in instant messages and text messages.

"How r u 2day?" AAAAAAaaargh. People like this should be beaten over the head with a Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. (If you haven't seen one, they are huge and weigh about 15 pounds! LOL)

I'm glad I am not the only one who feels this way.

I am originally from Ireland and a few years ago I read an essay written by my then 15 year old niece. It was University standard compared to over here.
Canada is not doing much better and I agree laziness is really a problem with society today.
I get really frustrated and angry trying to translate some of the questions and am appalled at the rudeness and crudity of many answers, And yes, many are "adults"

My biggest regret in bringing my boys to Canada is that they could not compete with a European youth in terms of education and job prospects.
My eldest was eight when we got here and was put two grades ahead of the Canadian kids. Sadly, as kids do to fit in, he was not challenged so he stopped trying.

Grammar and Spelling are both taught. Unfortunately, it has become acceptable to be lazy. It takes a bit more effort to spell and use punctuation. This attitude is indicative of the nature of many people, including youth as well as adults. It is a sign of the direction our country is going. It is a sign of the lack of integrity and energy that has pervaded the United States. It is a very sad state of affairs.

I really don't believe they do. Most of the newer teachers graduating that I met when in school had an abysmal grasp of English...the common saying was that if one couldn't make it in any other major, they could always get passed through as an Education major....so a very high percentage of the most marginal university students often end up as teachers....sad.

Yes, spelling just ties in with the lessons. Most teachers have spelling tests to help the students. As far as grammer, it's never going to change, but they will always teach it.

Apparently not!

For every one person with decent grammar, there are 100 with crappy grammar. I knew the education system in this country was faulty, but THIS bad?!

Depressing, isn't it?

I agree. My fifth grade English teacher is probably turning over in her grave as we speak.

It is extremely appalling. They will not be employable and will end up on welfare. It is scary.

I've noticed that too. Maybe they're using phonetic shorthand. Nah, it's gotta be what you said.
