Why do Priests become pedophiles so often?

I mean don't get me wrong i'm not saying all of them are or even a huge number, but it is in the news alot. What is the reasoning behind that? People tell me it's because they aren't allowed to get married to a woman, but that's a crock, if you are going to fall astray of your promise to god and all, why not do it with a woman...not a little kid...?

They were perverts before they became priests and either entered on a vocation that rejected sexuality altogether, hoping to hide from their problem, or in some cases that God would cure them in exchange for their service, or in many cases it seems they chose the profession simply because it provided them with opportunities and secrecy.

It's only in the news because they are priest. There are many pedophile cases that you just don't hear about.

Priest should be held to a higher standard than the average Joe, however one must remember, he is human and subject to human error.

A pedophile is a pedophile regardess of the title he/she may carry. Maybe he became a priest to avoid the feelings he was having? Maybe he thought if he could serve God the feelings would go away.

Whatever the reason I am sure it's not because he wasn't permitted to marry a woman. If someone told you that you couldn't marry a woman would that make you go molest a child?
I think not, if a priest wanted to have sex with a woman he would do so, not replace that urge with a child. That just doesn't make any logicial sense. Obviously he has always had the urges towards children and regardless of what he tried to do to avoid the urges they took him over.

By no means do I justify the actions of a pedophile in any way shape or form. It is just rediculous to think it has anything to do with being forbidden to marry a woman. I'm sure his vows included not having sex with children just as well.

Do priests become pedophiles or are pedophiles becoming priests? Big difference. I do not think being a priest will cause one to be pedophile. As a matter of fact, there is more likelihood that a pedophile will seek out being a priest to take him out of the world where he would be expected to have a normal man-woman relationship, and would put him in a state of being celibate. He may thing this is the perfect solution to his problem. He attempts to isolate himself and ends up in a situation with children in schools, young boys, etc.

Pedophilia is a mental illness which needs treatment.

haven't you noticed that the news has a tendancy to blow things way out of proportion and draw things out a lot longer than they should be, there are thousands of priests in this world that do so many good things for people around the world, and now that a small number of them have done bad things it gets blown out of proportion. and it doesn't just happen with priests, remember the whole bill clinton thing, the only reason he turned into a bad president is cause he got distracted by all the **** that was being exposed about him, but when he was in office we had worked the national debt down to nothing, then as soon as we change presidents guess what we do, we start a war on an intangible thing and spend tons of money.

Maybe these people want the answers and the forgiveness for what they can't understand or control. Religion is already mysterious. Psychology science and logic might be the "Other" answer. I think you may have it backward. Pedophiles tend to look for jobs that put them in a position of power over children. They also look for jobs that give them access to children. What better way to gain that much access to children than to become a priest or minister? These positions give them power, access and most people trust them.

I have no idea what the real answer is, but I can guess. Pedophiles might become preists to get clean.. maybe they do have some guilt, I doubt it, but maybe. The urge to be disgusting will not go away. Maybe they become priests to get to children and hid behind a robe?
