In the eastern states and a few others, insurance companies are required to notify them electronically of the status of your insurance. If you are from one of those states, they may know, but will not usually run your plates for that and no other reason (unless maybe they were really bored). Unfortunately, even if they were wrong, you probably won't see anything for your impound fees. Check with your insurance company to verify that all information on your policy is correct (a great way is to compare the vin on your id card to the vehicle itself). In the electronic notification states, the the vin your insurance company has doesn't match what the state has then you have "trouble"--make sense? If you can prove valid insurance at the time of all this, there won't be a fine and the case should be dropped.
If you had a previous lapse in insurance, however, there can still be consequences involved...
Good luck!

Don't know what state you are from but in New Mexico we have a proof of insurance card that we carry in our vehicles at all times which is asked for by officers when anyone is pulled over or involved in an accident etc; It is mandatory that this proof be in the vehicle at all times although most of the courts will dismiss when shown proof that the insurance was current. As far as getting your car out I would suggest an attorney to deal with the civil part of it in court. Good Luck!!!

No, it has not happened to me, but from what you just said, I think that I am pretty sure that the judge will be taking your side on this and I don't think that you will be gettting a ticket, and if you do get one, that seems TOTALLY wrong. And I also believe that the cop was wrong for pulling you over and taking your car and everything, but I just started to wonder, how did you get home??? Did he even give you a ride to where you were going??? Well I hope things work out for you in your court date!!! Good luck, but don't worry to much because all that I have heard from you, sounds like you won't get a fine!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

If the court does not award you a full refund of all costs associated with this event, I would take the city or county in which you live and the police force, be specific about the cop involved - to small claims court. It's about $20.00 to file and will cost them a dang sight more than you paid in fees to fight you in court. BUT if you did not have proof on you at the time, then you are in the wrong and you were fined, towed, impounded legally.

We have government insurance. There is one advantage. We cannot have registration without insurance, or insurance (except for a laid-up vechicle) without registration. So if the DVL computer tells the police you haven't renewed, or are suspended, that is plates and insurance. Very few are improperly ticketed and towed. You pretty much have to renew late on Friday, forget your paperwork at home, and get stopped on Sunday for that to happen, in which case you asked for it by not carrying proof of insurance.

i never heard of a cop pulling someone over for not having insurance. How would they know that you are uninsured??? he had to of pulled you over for a different reason. For what ever reason, you have to have proof of insurance on you, either in the car or in your wallet.
I would fight the initial reason he pulled you over and ask the courts to reimburse you for you time, fines, and for not having your car for three days.

well for all the people who say they cannot tell if you have insurance when a cop runs your plate, if your insuance has been canceled they can report it to dmv, the cop woudl have to run your plate to find this out, you might have done somethign and he gave you the ticket for this only, if you have proof go to court and you will win without a doubt
