I think they are as neccessary to the job as officers are. They provide neccessary information to officers about the call they are going to. I think they are truly underappreciated, underpaid, and never receive the notoriety due. I have never heard of a dispatcher receiving credit when they assisted in the capture of armed robbers. True, they are not on the scene with officers putting on the cuffs, but they relay information in regards to clothing descriptions and direction of travel to officers responding and so apprehension is made. They also provide vital life saving techniques by phone to people who have an injured family member. I do not know of many people that can not only calm a person that just found their relative not breathing but also walk them through CPR. They are a very special breed of person and although they sometimes make officers mad, they are still a neccessity, and a damn good one is hard to find.

As a dispatcher I have really enjoyed reading all the answers to this question. It is a very stressful job but I love it. The pay sucks, but the people that I work with are wonderful. I am very fortunate. I work for a department where everyone gets along well. And all the deputies love their dispatcher :) My very first night on the job after training I got a call from a lady that was locked up in the back of a store while someone was robbing the store. I was able to keep her calm and quiet until help arrived. He never knew that she was in the back. That was the day that I decided this was defiantly the job for me. Knowing that you just made a difference in someones day is amazing! I highly recommend it for anyone. The downside is you do have to deal with alot of BS, and tons of stress.

I have to say they are very necessary and I hope they are checking yahoo answers when they are not answering the radio. Nobody wants to piss off their dispatcher, your life is in their hands. Maybe I want get the standby the next time when they don't even know why I'm calling. Dispatchers as a whole are great. Some are overworked and have to monitor too many stations. I take my hat off to them, they have a difficult job.

I've been one and it's a stressful job for sure. Now that Detroit dispatcher who didn't send the police to the little boy's house who's mother died is an example of why we have such a thankless job. I switched to pharmacy. Less stressful that way. I got tired of sending cops to domestic violence calls, trying to calm hysterical people, things like that. But they make good money.

they are a nessary part of law enforcement they do a great job and save live, because of there quick thinking and the ability to hear the stress in voices so they know when to send back up even if the officer dose not have a chance to call for it.

They are some of the hardest working people I know. They do a thankless job and don't get the credit they deserve.

They are always forgotten, underpaid, unappreciated, and unrecognized, never thanked, and last considered.
