The old fashioned way -- just boil the coffee in a pot. To settle the grounds, some people added an ice cube, others used crushed egg shells. This is also known as campfire coffee. The easiest way to deal with the grounds is to either use a strainer or to make an extra cup of coffee so you can pour off the coffee from the top and not stir up the grounds.
Some people still insist this is the best way to make coffee.

That will work if you want gritty coffee, because the coffee grounds do not dissolve... If you don't have a coffee press, you may be SOL. Coffee presses allow you to pour hot water on the coffee, but then presses down with a fine mesh device to keep the coffee bits out of the liquid you'll drink. If your parents have a tea strainer, you could use that.

Get a plastic butter container about as big as a coffee filter you are using. Drill a small hole about the size of a pencil lead in the bottom of it. Place about 6-8 plastic coffee stirrers in the bottom of the container in a circular fashion around the bottom with one end of the stirrers pointing to the hole you drilled (gives a channel for the coffee to run toward). Place the coffee filter in along with an appropriate amount of coffee being careful not to disturb the stirrers. Place the container over a glass pitcher with a level rim and pour in 10-12 cups of very hot water. It will drip through in a few minutes and wha-lah.
A simpler method is to take 10-12 cups of water, heat until it is very hot and stir in a quarter cup of fresh coffee grounds. After a few minutes, take a large kitchen funnel and place it over the glass pitcher and place a coffee filter inside it. Then strain the coffee grounds out of the coffee as you pour it into the funnel.
An even simpler method is to buy a jar of instant coffee.

To answer your question, Yes you can, and you don't need to use instant, OR, socks, or paper filters. Buy yourself a "French Press" A French Press coffee maker is also known as a "plunger" or a "press pot". The most popular manufacturer is Bodum. Very recently, Starbucks even released a product that is a travel mug/ french press all-in-one combo. All of these products work the same way, the only difference is the "look" of the container. In addition to the French Press, you will also need a tea kettle for boiling water
Measure two level tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water, according to Peets Coffee and Tea. Water selection is another topic entirely, but common sense should prevail: the higher quality the water, the better your coffee will taste. Fill the tea kettle cold water and bring the water to a boil. When you pull the water off the flame, it will cool slightly and it will be just a bit under 212 degrees Fahrenheit (that's 100 degrees Celsius at one atmosphere of pressure). Pour the water directly into the French Press over the coffee grounds
Put the French Press lid on the pot, but do not depress the plunger yet. Putting the lid on the French Press will ensure that your coffee will retain heat for the appropriate amount of time. Let the coffee "steep" - i.e. leave it alone - for 3 to 5 minutes. This time window is long enough to extract all the positive flavors from the coffee without any bitter / negative flavors extracted
The coffee grounds will swell during the steeping time. After the appropriate amount of steeping, gently press the French Press plunger down. The mesh filter will push the coffee grounds to the bottom and separate the liquid from the coffee grounds. Pour the coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy
I have used these before, the above was the instructions on how to use one. The coffe that is made, its wonderful, you will never have a more PURE cup of coffee. The bitters are kept in the grounds, while you enjoy the true taset of coffee. Want to taste even better coffe, use filtered, bottled water. Try FIJI water, purest water you will ever drink.

There are many ways to prepare coffee even without the use of a coffee maker.
1:-- Heat the water.
2:-- Measure coffee grounds into a measuring cup.
3:-- Pour the hot water over the grounds.
4:-- Let the coffee steep.
5:-- Strain the grounds out as you pour the coffee into a mug.

You can put some coffee grounds in a filter and pour hot water slowly through it and get a strong cup of coffee, if you're in a pinch. Neat trick when you're camping and in need of caffeine.

the cowboys used to boil it in a tin can on the campfire. Just put the coffee beans or grinds into the water and boil it until it gets strong enough, and then strain it through their teeth as they drank it.

I use the filter basket from a broken coffeemaker and a new filter, fill it with 2tbsp of coffee, place it on top of a mug, and pour in a mug of water from my instant hot water tap. Let it drip into the cup and enjoy.
