keep the transmission fluid serviced on a 20k maximum plan and let the converter flush out by removing top trans cooler hose and catching fluid in a pan till it runs out the normal color [whole operation takes maybe 20 min. and 12-14 qts. trans fluid .

The '98,'99, and 2000 model cars had problems with the transfer case and the angle gear. The problems came about when owners put tires with different tread depths and/or patterns on the car at the same time. Owners who rotated their tires regularly and changed all four tires at the same time did not develop that problem. My '98 V70R had a noise from the angle gear when I bought it and that noise was still there and hadn't changed when I sold it 85,000 miles later. I even drove mine in several events at the local racing circuit. ( www.virclub.com if you care to look at the circuit.) My mother has changed all four tires at the same time every time and rotates the tires regularly on her '98 V70 GLT awd. And with just over 60,000 miles her AWD system is performing flawlessly. Look for one of those cars that has all the maintenence records. Make sure you have a mechanic with lots of Volvo experience check it out. The '99, '00, and '01 model cars had some electrical/computer problems though so be careful with them. Any of the cars that use the "Haldex" AWD system are great! I owned an '04 and an '05 V70R with that system and I loved them both. (Yes I tracked them too! so much FUN to force a BMW or Porsche to let you pass then watch 'em try to keep up!)

BIg time problems with angle gear ( transfer case),drivelines and trans solenoid 1-2 ...the transfer case is the biggest one problem..
if you are in need of one ...try a volvo salvage yard that does volvo only ...

Check the wheel bearing. Play there will move the abs disc away from the sensor and give a fault warning. This intermittent description is classic for that.
