lol normally refers to lots of laughs or laugh out loud.
if you search under "internet slang" you should also be able to find any others that you may not know what they mean.

Do yourself a favor to avoid miscommunication and misunderstanding and use the real english language and ask them to do the same. It really is a good habit to get into. Using short versions of words becomes a habit - we get young adults at work, just starting out in the workworld, that can't spell or cannot write a complete sentence. Old habits can be hard to break.
