LAX has 26 and 27 L/R and when CLE added a runway it changed the existing numbers from 5 to 6. Anything any stranger than that?

The runways are lined up to magnetic North, and it is slowly changing. Therefore if a runway is very close to the middle like 54.9 degrees it may change the next time the map comes out.

Runway numbers can change over time as magnetic variation changes. More often, though, the number is changed to avoid confusion with parallel runways. There are several airports with four or more parallel runways. Rather than have LAX call them 26OutsideLeft, 26InsideLeft, 26InsideRight, 26OutsideRight, they instead opted for 26L, 26R, 27L, 27R. They have to fudge the direction of two runways by 10 degrees, but the solution is much more elegant and less prone to dangerous mistakes.

In areas of magnetic unreliability, (northwestern Canada, for example) some runways are based on TRUE north, not magnetic north. In this case, it will be listed as Runway 05T.
