About 3-4 days ago we were required to do sit-ups in class. Everything was fine until around the end of the day when my rib cage began aching very badly. At first i thought the cause of pain may have just been because I have not done sit-ups in awhile and I tried to rub and massage my Stomach, but the pain still has not gone away. It's been about 3-4 days and the pain is still relevant. It has not gotten any better but it hasn't gotten any worse either, i was just wondering is this a sign that i did them wrong, an effect of me not doing them for so long, or is this a situation where i may need a doctor? All answers are welcomed, so please do not hesitate to leave any information that could help diagnose my problem, Thanks so Much!

You probably are just sore. Give it some more time before you panic.

If you are concerned because the pain is unbearable, by all means, see the doctor. In the meantime, your calcium levels are probably out of whack. Calcium is the lubricant that keeps muscles from acting like a stuck zipper. So you have to drink milk, or get supplements with calcium. For a slow remedy, lay on your back with knees flexed. Lift your right shoulder barely off the floor, and then twist to touch your right hand to your left hip. Do the same to the other side. Slowly, and only a few each night before hopping into a hot shower. It will help to release the lactic acids that have built up in the overworked muscles (because of a lack of calcium) and you will start feeling better in a few days.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Pain is a warning signal in your body. You are right not to ignore it. Sometimes when a person has not exercised a set of muscles for a while the pain usually sets in between 2 and three days. This pain can be ignored, it will get better quickly.

I don't think doing sit-ups can cause any permanent damage to your muscles or internal organs. You have nothing to worry about. But I have known people who have really done some serious damage to their spine from not doing the sit-ups correctly or just doing to many of them.

You obviously want to be in shape and maybe sculpt you body a bit. That is great. But unless you do exercises correctly you can harm yourself or receive no benefit from the workout.

Find someone who has the type of body you want. They are obviously doing something right. Ask them for their advise, I am sure they will be glad to help you.

But if you are a beginner, you will first have to learn how to breath correctly. This is fundamental and the place to start.

Good luck..

if your actual rib cage is hurting you may have pulled the muscles that hold your rib cage together. i cant remember the specific name now. I've done that before and it took me over a month to get back to normal!! i feel for ya! just take it easy for a while. eat right, drink plenty of water and get some good rest. you will heal.

1st, take some Advil. It should relieve pain and inflammation of the mussels. 2nd, if the pain continues for for another few go to a doctor. It may be a hernia. 3rd, it sounds like you did this at school. Is there a sports med. person you can go see, maybe even your teacher.

im gonna take a guess and say that you're a teenager so yes, its normal. when you're maturing, its normal to walk around with wood all day for no reason at all, all guys do when they're teenagers.

You're all right. You simply used a lot of muscles you are not used to using and overdid it a bit. Best thing to do? More situps.
