I study Renaissance art and I don't think you can say one was better than the other as they were so different. When you study people like this in great depth you almost feel as if you know them and you get a feel of what their personality may have been like.

In the art stakes they were both superb. I've been lucky enough to handle and view some of their work personally and they were both extremely talented artists. Michelangelo's genius lay in his ability in sculpture whereas Leonardo's genius lay in the fields of anatomy, science and technology. Michelangelo worked hard at his comissions, Leonardo worked hard for his own gratification.

I personally like Leonardo best as his love of animals, bitchiness, superb dress sense and capability as a polymath appeals to me.

I respect Michelangelo greatly but he was always a bit too tortured for my liking. Plus he hated Leonardo!

Never forget though that each bought something very special and highly important to the Renaissance, as did many other artists and that they were both equally important in this sense.

This is a tough call, but I think Da Vinci has a slight lead. Raphael could beat them both in painting. These three men are the best painters of the High Renaissance. Michelangelo is as noted for sculpture as for painting or more so and he was an architect. Da Vinci also was a sculptor and an architect. He was also an inventor and a scientist. Raphael had a shorter life than Da Vinci or Michelangelo.

Both were contemporaries. Da Vinci is famous, of course for the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa but Michelangelo was indeed the superior (and younger) artist with strong imagery and the depth of his paintings. Da Vinci is famous for his many contributions in so many fields, anatomy, sciences, etc. Hands down, however, in ART, Michelangelo. Look at both their works and you'll see and understand. Don't take anyone word for it, go and check both of their works!

Depends on what you're talking about. Michelangelo was a better artist, I think. Da Vinci had a more creative mind, but Michelangelo had better technique. (In my opinion.)

Hands down, as few works as he left behind, Da Vinci was the better painter. Michelangelo, however, was a far better sculptor. As to Frescos, I'd say they were about equal. Oh, yeah, in designing weapons of war, as well as in casting metal art, Da Vinci was better. Of course, M.A. really wanted to be the best sculptor ever. The Pope had to force him to paint the fresco on the Sistine Chaple. Da Vinci, on the other hand, wanted to be a scientist. And he was one. Centuries ahead of his time, too. All the other stuff D.V. did was just work to get money to support his research.
