As early as the person who will perform the operation allows.
Generally, as early as 7 weeks of age ( http://www.winnfelinehealth.org/reports/early-neuter.html ) for females too.
No, 6 months old may be too late. Getting your cat spayed before her first heat can prolong the female cat's life with years. Also, there was recently an answer around here that somebody's cat got pregnant at about 5 months - it's different for each cat, but it's not exceptionally early at that age.
So, again, as early as the vet allows - s/he knows best what s/he is up to.

You must wait until the kitten is 6 months old, as the ovaries in a female cat are not fully developed until then.
With a male cat it can be done when they are 6 weeks old but I would advise against this as a male kitten is fully developed either, and can cause problems for them when he is older.
Hope this helps.

As a general rule, 6 months is the recommended time. You could go a LITTLE sooner, but if you wait much later, they're gonna go into heat.

actually, studies suggest that you can do it a lot earlier than previously thought - even at 2 or 3 months . . .the old standard was around 6 months.

The SPCA does it when they weigh 3 pounds. But they are trying to rush the kittens out...so I would wait until your kitten is about 6 months.

The ASPCA suggests 3-4 months, that's when most of the humane society programs do their spay/nueturing.
