ok well my cat's upper lip is swollen and its bleeding every once in ahwile, and we called the vet and asked them what to do and they just said that a cut on the lip takes awhile to heal, and that was it. well we think that one of our other cats scratched her while playing or arguing one of the two and so now her lip is swollen on top. what can I do to comfort her and ease the swelling and stop the bleeding??

feed her canned food, not dry. You can try a cool cloth on her face if she will tolerated it.

You best bet would probably be to take it to the vet instead of calling them. I'm surprised they didn't tell you to bring it in. They will be able to give the cat some medicince for it. Of course if it is a pretty recent issue, you may not need to do that. Just make sure that you clean the wound. You might could put some peroxide on it if you clean it again afterward and that will help disinfect it. But check with the vet if that is safe for them or not, I can't remember. Make sure that the area does not get dirty. I would say to put some antibiotic cream on it, since it will not hurt the cat, but since it's on its lip, he would eat too much of it. I might would call a DIFFERENT vet and ask what home remedy you could put on an infected cut. There are also a lot of sites out there that give good cat care tips from vets that might give you additional ideas of what you can put on a cat. Good Luck.

Your vet is entirely right in that the tissue around the mouth is different from regular skin tissue and it does take longer to heal than say a skin lesion. It does concern me when you say it is swollen as that could be an indication of infection. If it doesn't seem to be better tomorrow or the tissue feels hot and looks "angry" I would call the vet again as he may want to start some antibiotic for her.

Calendula lotion (marigold) is available in health food stores and is very effective and fast acting in closing superfical wounds, soothing too. Actually it is so effective that it should not be used for a puncture wound because it would seal the infection inside the body.

It's entirely non-toxic for the cat and easily obtainable. She will probably lick it off of course and you can just put some more on without hurting her.

ok first of all the cat is your pet that you obvisouly love alot, so you want to do the very best thing possiable. If you don't get the right answer from one vet keep trying as much vets as you can afford til the job is done. Now I can't stand cats, but I am a animal lover, mostly dogs, there mans best friend, plus I don't know to much about cats personalitys so I rather not deal with them. My mother had a bunch of cats along time ago and she was scratched so bad that she had to go to the hospital

Your cat may be chewing on something that is causing this, such as stiff wire. I'd watch her for a few days to find out what's causing this.
As for swelling, cats aren't real hip to holding an ice pack on themsleves. If it's it same cut that's starting to swell, that's a definite sign of infection, and I'd contact the vet again.

The area may be infected since it's swollen. Take her to another vet to get some antibiotics
