Whey protein is an extract from milk. It is very low fat, very low carbohydrate and very high in protein. (At least, until the companies add flavor and sweetners to it.) The body absorbs whey protein very rapidly (unlike a steak which takes hours to digest). This makes whey an excellent choice of protein right after you workout when your body needs protein the most.

The way to use it is to take 1 scoop in water just before you workout, and another scoop right after working out. Follow with a small protein and carbohydrate meal half an hour later and another small protein and carbohydrate meal about 2.5 hours later.
