Because a lot of people rely on religion as a supernatural security blanket.

It is interesting that you would say that it is such a BIG problem. The current "problems" that we find ourselves facing are the result of a small percentage of extremists. All around this world in free nations many different religions worship in their own way side by side. I live in a small midwestern community and we have mosques, temples, and churchs. Even in the middle east the problems are caused by a very small percentage of the population. There are Jews, Christians, and Muslims living in very close proximity. The vast majority of those folks just want what every other sane person wants: to live in peace, raise a family, and make a little money to be able to enjoy life. If this truly were a "big problem" that area would be a parking lot, devoid of any life.
I love it when people when use the Nazis and WWII to defend their position on current events. We did not get involved in that war because of the Holocaust!!! We did not even know that was taking place until we actually started conquering German territory and finding the concentration camps. We got involved to protect our interests and to honor treaties we had with our allies. The bottom line was money, just like it always has been and still is today. You say to read a history book, I say you better read more than one!!! The piece of crap the public school handed you that said History on the cover is a bunch of revisionist nonsense.
This world has not seen wide spread religious conflict since the Crusades. When that sort of thing happens with the technology we currently have to wage war, life as we know it will end. Those days may be coming but we are no where near it now. 9/11 may have seemed like a major tragedy. When you compare those numbers with the global conflicts of the past 9/11 was a traffic accident. That is a sad truth and an ominous point.

I disagree.
WW1 and WW2 had nothing to do with religion.
However religion does play a great part in justifying wars.
Addition:
Hitler killed the Jews because the were Jews, yes. But the holocaust was not the intenition of hitler's war. He wanted to create the third german empire which would last 1000 years. The jews were used as a scapegoat to start up the war.
It was about a land grab, not religion.

It's not the religion, it's the people. And Hitler killing Jews really wasn't about religion (yes, I know JUDAISM is a religion); it was about HATE and a crazy, charismatic, bitter man. HItler's vast problem were not the fault of religion.
We can't just drop it because it's so important to most people. Relatively few people can live w/o believing in something.

The heads of all the world's religions are basically CEOs. They understand marketing, and the potential for huge ceaseless profits. Money talks, peace walks.

Nope there will still be problems. People have their own opinion about things and think they are right. So its just not religion. Its just people. We all need to ACT right.

WWI and WWII were *not* about religion. Neither were 99% of the last major wars.
Reply:
I get it, Hitler wants to exterminate the Jews so you blame *that* on religion?
Yeah, that makes sense to me (eyes rolling).
Oh, and by the way, he also extermintated, Communists, Czechs, Greeks, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, mentally and physically handicapped, Poles, Russians, Serbs, Socialists, Spanish Republicans, trade unionists, Ukrainians, Yugoslavians, prisoners of war and others.
But yeah, WWII was about 'religion'...
Sheesh

Just drop it all? Good luck prying it from their tight grip they have on it... The ones who realize these things did drop it already.
