You could try to make her a basketball or baseball shaped caked. I'm pretty sure they have molds out there for it. As for the 140 dollars, that is a rip off and I wouldn't go there.

Many craft stores like JoAnns or Michael's have a cake decorating section. Take a look there for different shaped pans- they have holiday pans, sports pans, cartoon characters- and they are cheaper than 140 bucks! They also have all kinds of sprinkles and food colors and edible designs to put on cakes.
I did a cake once for an 11 year old once, of teddy bears at a pool. I added blue food coloring to white icing, and made a round cake into a "pool". Then I took Teddy Grahams cookies and drew little bathing suits on them with decorating gel.
Another neat thing you can do is make two cakes, and cut shapes out of one of the cakes with cookie cutters. Place the shapes on top of the cake that is whole, and ice over the whole thing to give it that "3d" look.
Hope that helps!

You can also go to a hobby shop and look in the cake decorating aisle..... they have different shapes of cake pans. Including some that will allow you to make a 3-D cake.. My mother used to make me a 3-D cake of a teddy bear when I was younger. The brand to look for is Wilton. They have lots of different toppers, cake pans, books and all sorts of things to make a creative cake.
You can also check with you local grocery store bakery... they can usually sell you an uniced cake and a pretty low price. Then you can decorate it the way you like!
Another source to check out is Womans World magazine, they usually have pretty cool cake or cupcake ideas. You can find it at the grocery store for like $1.99.
Hope that helps!

I saw a show on TV last week that showed these bakers making a 3D dog cake! They used Rice Krispy bar mixture to sculpt the form, and then frosted the cake. It was sooo cool looking.
My suggestion is that at Wal-Mart & Sam's Club bakeries they will make a sugar transfer of any picture you bring in, and it transfers the picture to the top of your cake, and it looks soooo cool. Maybe you could get a picture of the dog you were wanting, and have them do that instead.
Good luck!

How about a hamburger cake? Just go to http://hamburgercake.com and it will show you the details on how to turn a plain chocolate cake into a cake that looks like a hamburger with all of the trimming. It's really cute.

Make a round cake...basketball or baseball. Or make a sheet cake and cut it into the shape of a baseball diamond...then frost the diamond tan with bases made of candy and make the outfield green...if you really want to get creative put different colored m&m's around the outfield like people watching the game...That would be cute.

Make a 2d dog shaped cake instead of 3d. You might be able to find a cake mold and bake it yourself.

$140.00? - No thank you. Just think of what she likes and incorporate it into the cake. Because hey, she's very above average! I'm sure she'll love whatever you do. And now I want some cake!
